For you.
Today was an average day.
I woke up, took a shower, and went to work.
While I was at work, I was sent a message that my blog post was going viral. At 4:50, it had 3,500 notes.
I just got home from work and that number has reached over 32,000. There’s hundreds of messages in my ask box. Some have applauded me, while some have sent messages saying “I’m going to rape you.”
Needless to say, I’m a bit blown away.
I’ve been asked to tell what happened the other night, so here you go.
I was walking home to my apartment. Bars had already closed, so the city was fairly quiet. Two guys were walking behind me, both looking to be a bit older than myself. I was only a few steps ahead of them when I heard them making calls to the girl across the street who was obviously intoxicated. She quickened her pace and didn’t respond. One of the guys was obviously put off on this and said, “Fucking cunt, I’d take her into the back alley and show her what I’m made of. She won’t even see it coming”, and then proceeded to laugh.
And then I turned around and punched him in the face.
I don’t regret doing it, though I do understand that there are other ways that the situation could have been handled. At the time, however, what he said as a “joke” also seemed very much like a legitimate threat.
The blog post was for myself and for my friends. I wasn’t expecting it to explode in the 6hrs I was at work. I’m not telling people to go out and hit “everybody who offends you” (though many of you are believing that was the point). However, I do believe that serious action needs to be taken towards rape culture.
1/6 women and 1/33 men will deal with sexual assault in their lifetime. Making jokes or threats because you think they’re “funny” is not okay. Punching someone isn’t okay either, but it happened.
It’s up to you to decide how you feel about it.
I feel like I’m in The Boondock Saints.
Okay guys. this is from the lovely lady that made this post about punching an awful street harasser. She’s getting threats and very mean anons from very ridiculous people and I’m reblogging to tell her that I completely understand why she reacted the way that she did and I think she’s pretty cool. I’m sorry you had to go through that and I hope your hand feels better soon.
